KALAHARI BOTSWANA SUMMER SAFARI
A tailor made safari of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana.
From December to April is rainy season in Botswana. This is also my favourite time to visit this beautiful country. A summer safari in Botswana is arguably better, but differs completely from a dry winter safari.
The Moremi and Savuti areas are often inaccessible, but it is the best time to visit the Kalahari. We will tailor make the safari to suit your needs, but you can use this itinerary as a guideline for your self-drive summer safari.
Day 1. Kalahari Monate Lodge 10 km from Upington in the Spitskop Nature Reserve offers excellent self-catering accommodation. It might be a good idea to start your trip here. You can easily drive to Upington to buy your last supplies.
Day 2 Molopo Lodge. The indigenous people of South African are truly interesting. I would recommend staying one night at the Molopo Lodge just before the entrance of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Visit Dawid Kuiper and his Komani San people. See how they live and survive in this harsh environment.
Day 3 and 4. Nossop is the best known of the bigger camps in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and I would spend at least two nights here. This is only if I do not manage to get accommodation in the very popular bush camps such as the famous Grootkolk. It is possible to camp in Nossob, but I would prefer stay in a chalet. The demand for the camps is high and you might need to settle for the second best.
Day 5 You will leave the park at Kaa, but before you can do so you will need to drive for 80 km through loose sand. We recommend that you camp one night on the Botswana side of the park in order to experience the complete isolation.
Day 6 and 7 : Kaa to Ghanzi. This is a rather long drive. Give yourself enough time to relax. Spend two nights at Thakadu near Ghanzi. You are on holiday and this game farm with its waterhole and prolific bird life is just the place to be. You can choose between air-conditioned chalets or Meru tents. Meals are available in the restaurant. Ghanzi is a relatively big town and you can stock up for your visit to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.
Day 8 and 9. Piper Pan. Drive south and enter the Central Kalahari Game Reserve at Xade. Make sure that you take enough food and water for the entire trip. Except “long drops”, there is nothing in the line of facilities in this magnificent park. Here you will most likely find yourself experiencing complete isolation.
During the summer months, huge herds of plain game congregate on the plains in the Deception Valley. They are followed by large predators. The isolation, the abundance of game and the wonderful green vegetation makes this a favourite destination during summer. Very few animals will be seen during the dry winter months.
Day 10 and 11. Spend two nights on or near Deception pan. This is a beautiful place with large numbers of game during the rainy season.
Day 12. Khama Rhino Sanctuary. Khama Rhino Sanctuary is a beautiful small game reserve near Serowe. Their self-catering accommodation is the perfect place to end a fantastic holiday. From here you can easily drive to Gauteng in less than a day.
However, if time permits, include areas such as Drotsky’s Cabins along the Western panhandle of the Okavango Delta in your safari and even the Caprivi and Chobe region. The vegetation is beautiful during the summer and birdlife very special due to the numerous summer migrants that visit the region.
